Chicago Torture Justice Center

WOODLAWN

The establishment of the Chicago Torture Justice Center provides an opportunity to address victims of police brutality. Currently housed in the Woodlawn neighborhood, it is an objective of CTJC to have their future facilities located on the South Side. Recognizing the injustice that has taken place, the new center will provide a living, breathing space for healing, and allow people to help each other.

Civic Projects has worked with CTJC through the many stages of the project, starting with strategic planning and mission overview, and continuing with stakeholder workshops and space planning. When developing the initial strategic plan, Civic heard from torture survivors and family members that this was the first time someone has asked about their needs for the new center. Ongoing work has included community workshops focused on resiliency in neighborhoods and programming for the new facility. CTJC will soon initiate a capital campaign to situate their facility on Chicago’s South Side.

From our photovoice workshop one survivor reflected:

“The integrity of justice looks like us. Without us, there is no picture.”
