Civic Projects is working the National Museum of Mexican Art (NMMA) to revitalize the education spaces to better serve the Pilsen community. In October 2022, NMMA received a $500,000 grant from BMO to put towards the enhancement of its education spaces and programs.
Renovation of the existing NMMA Art Studio which is a space used for youth arts programming within the museum. Associated with this space is a storage/prep room utilized by teaching artists and program coordinators who lead classes in the Art Studio as well as at different school locations across the City of Chicago. These two spaces are undergoing a full renovation of updated finishes and new millwork for better, more efficient storage and organization of all the art materials that are used and stored.
In addition to renovating these two spaces, the project also includes converting a portion of a storage room into a recording and podcasting room associated with the Art Studio. This room will be soundproofed and outfitted with state-of-the-art audio equipment.
Feature of the design by Civic Projects is for new custom solid wood millwork in each of the spaces, to improve the organization and access to materials by the different artists and teachers that use the space, and for a fresh modern look that meets the aesthetic of the young people at the NMMA.
